Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest lakes in the world. It occupies the territory of Albania and Macedonia and is interesting because of its natural surroundings and health benefits. It is a difficult terrain, surrounded by mountain slopes. Because of this there is a large variety of fish and wildlife.

To relax on the lake tourists come to the resort of Pogradec. From Tirana there is a distance of 140 km. The way by rented car takes 2,5 hours on a beautiful road.

It is worth to come here for several days to explore the main sights of the resort. But if you come to relax on the lake, you can make it in one day.

Why come to Ohrid:

  • take a walk along the lakefront;
  • enjoy the mountain scenery and views of Ohrid;
  • dive and explore the underwater world;
  • relax on the beach and swim (if you are in the season);
  • dine at a local cafe and taste the freshly caught fish.

Things to do at the lake

The best place to start exploring the area is the Drilon National Park, located on the shores of the lake. Here you can taste the healing water from underground springs, stroll along the river with ducks and swans, relax in a cozy gazebo and take beautiful pictures. Fishing is allowed here, so those who wish may try to catch fish.

If time permits, in the neighboring settlements you can see the ancient castles, shrines, Illyrian ruins and the Museum of Lina Mosaics.

Be sure to take a boat ride on the lake, and for fans of extreme sports offer paragliding. If you come in the warm season, you can go scuba diving, snorkeling or just swim in the pristine turquoise water.

Ohrid often hosts music festivals, to which the stars of opera and the Philharmonic come. There is a very developed musical culture here.

Along the lake you can walk for hours and enjoy the gorgeous nature. Especially beautiful in sunny weather. Definitely a place not for partying, but for a quiet, measured rest and recuperation.

Local food

The place is famous for the dishes from the fish caught in Ohrid Lake. It is cooked in different ways, so everyone can choose to his/her own taste. And the taverns and cafes will please not only with delicious food, but also with great views of the lake and mountains.

In addition to fish you can try the national cold soup "tarator" (from yogurt or sour milk), "ćumlek" (stewed meat with onions), bureki (pie with different fillings), gyros (similar to our shawarma).

Best time to visit

The season at Lake Ohrid begins from May to October. In the summertime the water gets warm enough to swim in it and explore the underwater world. The climate is pleasant, so tourists come here in droves. If you want a secluded vacation, it is better to visit out of season. Winters are warm enough and nature is still beautiful.
