In Kefalonia there is a small, cozy village of Assos. The population is about 100 people. The colorful flower-covered houses, the azure bay, the traditional Greek tavernas and the surrounding scenery will make the trip unforgettable.

From Argostolion it's about an hour's drive (36 km), so the best solution is to rent a car. Closer to the village the road becomes serpentine, but very landscaped. From the mountain there is a view of the coastline and Assos itself. There is parking in the village, but there is not much space, so you should come here early. After leaving the car in the parking lot, go on a hike through the neighborhood. The day promises to be interesting.

What to do in Assos

The resort has no entertainment, discos and parties. Here you can relax quietly and enjoy the local atmosphere.

The first thing to do is to walk through the small streets with beautiful houses. It is a place full of flowers. You will be very welcome and friendly villagers, with whom you can talk and learn the history of the region.

Along the streets are taverns in the national style, where you can enjoy delicious overseas food. Also, the stores offer a good selection of souvenirs depicting the village.

The water in the sea is clean and warm. However, during the season there are a lot of tourists and if you do not want to crowd on the beach, you should walk a little further from the center. There you can find a wild, sparsely populated beach in dense greenery. Bonus: beautiful pictures and quiet all around.

In Assos itself, there is a historical landmark - the remains of a Venetian fortress. To get here you have to walk 2 km uphill or drive this distance by car. In the second case it is better to go closer to sunset, meet the sunset from above and go on your next journey.

On the way to the castle there is a church and a bench on which you can relax and enjoy the scenic views.

Cafes and local food

The main advantage of all the cafes in Assos is the special atmosphere around. The view of the coast, the aroma of the flowers and the attentive staff leave no one indifferent. Each place is unique in its own way, but we would like to single out two in particular:

  • Restaurant Nefeli - Anait

Will surprise its visitors a great location, where you can see the bay and the mountain with the fortress. There is a menu in Russian. Worth noting special dishes from the chef.

Be sure to try the caramelized octopus, fish soup with shrimp and mussels, pasta with seafood, and for dessert chocolate sausage or homemade cake with Greek coffee. Often the owners treat their guests to delicious cakes of their own making.

  • 3 Wise Monkeys

A great Greek-style tavern with delicious food and pleasant music playing for good cheer.

The best burgers of Kefalonia are served here. A good selection of meat and vegetarian dishes. Pizza, Katsu curries, cocktails and desserts are the things you must try, being in this cozy place.
