Only half an hour away from Novi Sad there is the amazingly beautiful Fruska Gora National Park. If you are traveling by car from Belgrade, the road will take about 1.5 hours.
The river Danube, carefully protected picturesque nature, mountain peaks, monasteries and quietly walking animals are all gathered in one place. People come here from all over the world to enjoy a relaxing, memorable vacation at any time of the year. In addition, fossils from millions of years ago have been found in the national park, which shows the historical value of the place.
What to do:
- visit the museum and learn about the history of the park, its fauna and flora;
- go hiking or biking in the surrounding area;
- go fishing or have a picnic in the most picturesque corners of the park;
- view beautiful, well-maintained monasteries and experience the monks' welcoming attitude toward tourists;
- buy traditional natural Serbian liqueurs;
- visit an apiary and see how bees are bred.
Landmarks
In the park there are well preserved churches and monasteries of the 16th century. Beautiful architecture and interior decoration, an atmosphere of tranquility and peace. Very hospitable and sociable monks, after meeting them you feel a sense of harmony and renewal.
In total there are 16 monasteries, but if you come for a day, you must see the main ones: Staro Chopovo, Krushedol, Grgeteg, Velika Remeta, Beocin.
On the territory there are preserved late medieval buildings - libraries and treasuries.
But the main attraction of the park is untouched nature. You can walk for a long time along the forest paths, meet roe deer, deer or fallow deer. Listen to the singing of rare birds, breathe in the aromas of fresh air and medicinal herbs.
Local food
There are cafes and restaurants on the territory of the reserve, where you can have a delicious meal with Serbian dishes. Traditional juicy shish kebab, meat sausages, lamb baked in a cauldron with vegetables. Tender gingerbread and national cookies, dried fruits and natural honey from the apiary are served for dessert. Very fragrant mountain herbal teas and freshly squeezed juices. You can try and buy home quality local wine.
Shopping
Souvenir shops and local merchants of Fruska Gora offer to buy magnets, and small plates depicting the sights of the park. Hand embroidered towels, pottery and clay products, Serbian dolls in national clothes.
It is worth bringing wine from these places, because Fruska Gora is the main center of Serbian winemaking. Its fertile lands allow to grow many varieties of grapes. There is also an interesting drink - bermet. Its recipe has been passed down from generation to generation and is kept in secret as a relic of this region. Bermet is made by mixing different kinds of spicy plants and wine.
