If you want to relax on the beach while visiting historical sites and learning about the architecture and culture of coastal Croatia, Split is the perfect city for it. The Adriatic Sea, mountain scenery, fruit trees along the streets that are intertwined with ancient ruins and architectural monuments of the Middle Ages.
The closest way to Split is from Sibenik (1 hour 20m) and Zadar (about 2 hours). If you travel from the capital you'll have to spend from 4 to 5 hours (depending on the way you choose). But the way is worth the time.
Landmarks
In the III century AD Diocletian's palace was built, which today is the best preserved in Europe. It is the first place to go. It is protected by UNESCO, and one of the seasons of "Game of Thrones" was filmed there. Walking around the area you can feel the spirit of those times, as if you are transported back to the times of the Roman emperors. At the same time there are a lot of cafes, restaurants and stores. In the labyrinths of the historic complex, don't miss the cathedral, the temple of Jupiter and stroll through the palace square.
Be sure to visit Marjan Park, which offers a great view of the sea and the city. You can see the gallery of Croatian artist Ivan Meštrović, which is located in the park.
History lovers can have a look at the Museum of Croatian archeological monuments with medieval artifacts. The Museum of Ethnography will acquaint you with the household items and interiors of Croatia from different eras. Croatian Sea Museum will tell its visitors about the finds from the bottom of the Adriatic Sea, the sea battles, fishing, and the history of sailing ships.
There's also an oceanarium and Dinosaur Park, which will be fun for kids. Stroll along the spacious promenade, from here you can see the fortress, the sea with numerous liners and growing palm trees. If there is time left, visit one of the beaches, which are considered the main attraction of all tourists to Split.
Shopping
If you want to bring something back from here, tourists usually buy local chocolate, essential oils, olive oil, and natural honey. Alcohol lovers can take with them not bad wine and brandy, which is infused with various fruits and herbs.
Of souvenirs, very popular are statuettes made of white stone, quarried on the island of Brac and antiques, which can be bought near the center at a flea market or in stores.

- Excellent desserts are served at Os Kolac, where you can snack on a cup of coffee and a delicate, creamy dessert.
